A Fremantle kind of day

There is something to be said about the vibe and feeling you get when visiting the City of Fremantle. You feel a sort of detachment to the fast paced nature of the city and you can slow down. Mindfulness starts to occur when you’re meandering through the old streets and the people who live and work here can be seen dining alfresco style on the famous café strip. Creatives are in Fremantle by the bucket load, and you can see them in action at the new MANY 2.0 project space, Fremantle Art Centre, or on the street were you can see someone casually painting murals freehand with chalk.

I don’t believe you can ever feel out of place in this city, and any sort of alternative lifestyles or hobbies are fully welcomed. The sense of community here is palpable and its shines brightest in suburbs like South Fremantle were the locals are known by name and store clerks and hospitality workers welcome the friendly chat. Seeing this, as a city outsider makes me yearn for these aspects that drive this progressive and friendly city forward. The age bracket for Fremantle does not feel stagnant and seniors, university students, children and working professionals are more than happy to cross between age demographics, creating an interesting cultural mixing pot of people. The environment movement is deeply rooted in the Fremantle culture and you will see many of the cafes advertising keep your own cup coffees, reusable grocery bags and environmentally friendly clothing detergent to name but only a few items on offer.

You have the ocean at your fingertips in Fremantle and the views are some of the best on offer! Watch as the ships and cruisers roll into the famous harbour and anchor, watch friendly and playful dolphins catching dinner as you take in another glorious Western Australian sunset. Enjoy a communal eating spot by the rainbow container outdoor art project, were some of Perth’s favourite food vans collect to serve brisket burgers, tacos, waffles, juices and coffee. If you’re in the mood for some local music and are heading out of Fremantle, drop into Mojos bar and take in some new and upcoming artists at this local favourite. This city has come a long way from its fisherman and hippy roots, and you can find antiques, local designers, fresh food markets and heritage listed buildings galore! Fremantle takes little pieces of the things everyone loves and connects them all together into a gloriously fitting creative puzzle. Enjoy and fall in love every time you visit, it is a truly special place.
