The melenial job slump

When I was little, I was bright eyed and bushy tailed. Im now in my late twenties and a little less bright eyed and my tail is not as bushy. This is partly because of the newest trend coming out of Australia wich sees 20 something univeristy degree holders working hospitality to pay there way and as soul crushing as this may sound, it is a reality for many.

There is an intangible message that universities send to prospective students; "Once you hold a degree, nothing can stop you and you will have the world at your finger tips". This is the reality for those lucky few graduates who have a friend in HR, a family member with a friend in your chosen field or just plain good luck on your part. The reality is that when you hit the big 30 you will still be serving coffee and having a mum of one give you major stink eye for not making her double shot skinny decaf dirty chai with almond milk extra hot.

I had some prior knowledge that hospitality was a harsh industry, but this prior knowledge did not prepare me for the swearing, spitting, faeces, vomit and nappies that ensued. The job hunt and hour long application processes for millenials seems never ending, kind of like the lines at centrelink you will be waiting in, were you seem to lose all hope of ever seeing the sky again. Baby boomers are now staying in their jobs longer for security, whilst the government pushes the average pension age upwards of 65 and there are no new spots for millenials to fill. I dont resent baby boomers for staying in a good job for security, although I really would love to see new postions being created and a spotlight being shon e on the growing number of jobless graduates, myself

included.
